BEAR    FACTS    --    February    22,    1997

Good morning! I'm Jen Lighter!

And I'm Scott Reising! Welcome to another fact-filled
episode of the "Bear Facts", the weekly radio show where we
keep you in touch with everything that's news at Bishop
Garrigan High School.

Last Tuesday twenty top BGHS students were inducted into
the National Honor Society. NHS is a service organization
that honors students who excel in scholarship, leadership,
service, and character. There are two new seniors in
National Honor Society this year. They are Kristy Frideres
of Ottosen and Tim Hellman of Bancroft.

Eighteen juniors are also joining National Honor Society.
From the Algona area there's Ruby Bode, Lisa Boekelman,
Brad Frideres, Carrie Kohlhaas, Kim Kramer, Jenessa
McGuire, Tiffany Meyer, and Tom Twait. There's also a lot
of new members from Whittemore. They include Katie Elbert,
Amy Goodman, Jenny McAlpine, Tim Mosbach, and Jamie
Schmidt. Other new members include Angie Dornbier of
Wesley, Beth Haag from West Bend, Brian Kohlhaas and Sadie
Kohlhaas of LuVerne, and Brandy Youngwirth of Bancroft.

Last week six Garrigan students competed at the MOC/Floyd
Valley Invitational Quiz Bowl at Orange City. The Bears
racked up three wins and one tie against teams from the far
western part of the state. While they made a respectable
showing, unfortunately they were not among the top four
teams that advanced to the play-offs. The Bears' next quiz
bowl tournament will be March 15th at Blairsburg.

It's individual speech season at BGHS. Coaches Mary McCall
and David Burrow are busy preparing this year's speech
entries. Speech contestants for 1997 include Cindy
Bormann, Kristi McGraine, Katie Reising, and Jenni Krieps;
as well as Ruby Bode, Tiffany Meyer, Julie Henkelvig,
Carrie Kohlhaas, and Jenessa McGuire. Also on this year's
speech roster are Sarah Reel, Mark DeLange, and Louie Bode.
District individual contest will be next Saturday, March
1st, at Garrigan.

Last week the Golden Bear girls made school history by
becoming the first varsity team in any sport to complete
their regular season undefeated. With their win over
Humboldt they had a perfect 18-0 record and uncontested
possession of the North Central Conference championship.
Wednesday night the girls defeated Belmond/Klemme in the
first round of play-offs, and the action continues tonight
at 7:00, when the Bears play their second round game right
here in the Garrigan gym. If they should win that game,
they will play in regionals next Tuesday.

It's also time for the boys' basketball playoffs. The boys
open their post-season play next Monday when they face the
Clarion-Goldfield Cowboys at Belmond. While most people's
hopes for the boys aren't quite as high as they are for the
girls, we're all proud of the way the guys have turned
around their program this year. After getting only one win
all season a year ago, the boys climbed to an even record
this year. Last week they even came within two points of
an overtime victory over the state runners-up from Algona
High.

This week's Senior Spotlight shines on Eric Reding, who
everyone knows as "Radar". Eric is the son of Barb and
Bill Reding, and he lives in the St. Joe Bode area. Eric
works in the produce department of the Algona Hy-Vee store.
He also enjoys playing intramural basketball for the
Attack Force. Next year Eric will be attending Iowa State
University, and we wish him the very best of luck in
college.

On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there's a lot of
events. Tonight the girls have their big play-off game at
Algona High.

Monday the boys' track team starts their practices for the
spring. That night the boys' basketball team plays their
district opener against Clarion-Goldfield at Belmond.

Tuesday night girls' regional games begin. Then on
Wednesday night the Garrigan and Seton math teachers will
share their recent experimental units with other teachers
from around the area.

Next Friday Garrigan and Seton will have school, even
though the Algona Community Schools have the day off. We
will have parish busing that day.

Friday night is the girls' regional finals. Then next
Saturday we'll be hosting the district individual speech
contest right here at Garrigan.

That's the "Bear Facts" for another week. Thanks for
listening, and be sure to tune in again next week for more
news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
