Good morning! I'm Casey Wolf!
And I'm Zeb Besch! Welcome to another edition of the 'Bear
Facts', the weekly radio show where we keep you in touch
wih all the news from Bishop Garrigan High School.
This was a week of ups and downs at Garrigan. One of the
saddest days was Wednesday, when we learned of the sudden
death of Larry Hilbert, a Garrigan graduate and the father
of sophomore Lynn Hilbert. A tragedy like this saddens
everyone, and we all want the Hilbert family to know that
our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of
sorrow. We offer them our sincere sympathy now and in the
coming days.
The week's news was certainly not all sad, though. The
happiest event probably came last night when the Golden
Bear girls beat Manson/Northwest Webster to earn their
second straight appearance in the state basketball
tournament. That's right--the Bears are headed back to
Vets! They'll make their debut in Des Moines on Wednesday,
March 12th, and this year we're crossingour fingers that
the undefeated girls just might go all the way to the top.
We'll fill you in on nex week's show with all the details
of the girls' trip to the 'big dance' in Des Moines.
The girls aren't the only big sports news, though. A year
ago the Golden Bear boys finished the season with a record
of 1 win and 18 losses. Who'd have thought then that a
year later they'd be 12 and 8, and in the district finals.
Last week the Bears edged past Clarion/Goldfield and went
on to murder Belmond/Klemme. Their next game will be next
Tuesday night, when they play Manson/Northwest Webster at
Humboldt. If they win there, they'll play at Forest City
on Friday for the right to go to state.
The boys' team has really come together on both offense and
defense. Senior Dennis Becker was the top shooter in the
Clarion game, and he was tops in assists against Belmond.
Ben DeWaard has been one of the team's top rebounders,
while Eric Scobba, Chris Miller, and Andy Laubenthal help
out with taking the ball to the hole. Other boys to watch
include seniors Zeb Besch, Chris Eischen, Matt Molacek, and
Cory Mescher; and juniors Tom Twait and Michael Courtney.
The boys are definitely the Cinderella team of the area,
and we're crossing our fingers that the magic will continue
through at least two more big games.
While most of the top stories this week are in sports,
there's another big event happening today. More than four
hundred students from around the area are gathered at BGHS
today for the district individual speech contest. Garrigan
itself has sixteen entries at district. In Acting, Cindy
Bormann will present 'The Waltz' and Kristi McGraine will
perform 'The Little Red Shovel'. 'Two Acts of God' is
Katie Reising's Acting piece, and Jenni Krieps will act out
'Bubbles Goes to School'.
Cindy Bormann will present Theodore Roosevelt's 'The
Strenuous Life' for Public Address, while Tiffany Meyer
will perform 'Stand Up'. In Poetry, Julie Henkelvig will
read a parody of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' while
Jenni Krieps will do a take-off on 'Cinderella'. Carrie
Kohlhaas' poem is 'The Creation'. Kristi McGraine is also
entered in Prose, where she will read 'The Little Match
Girl', while Jenessa McGuire reads 'I'm the One Who Stands
Out in a Crowd'.
Garrigan has two Storytelling entries. Julie Henkelvig
will tell the stor of 'The Boy Who Fooled the Giant', and
Jenessa McGuire will present 'Guess How Much I Love You'.
Finally, in Radio News Announcing, the Bears have three
entries: Katie Reising, Ruby Bode, and Mark DeLange. Mary
McCall and David Burrow coach individual speech at B.G.H.S.
This week's Senior Spotlight shines on basketball manager
Amy Schiltz. Amy is the daughter of Rose and Ed Schiltz of
Bancroft. She enjoys playing softball, volleyball, and
track. Amy enjoys rollerblading and rollerskating in
summer and snow skiing in the winter. Next year she plans
to attend Waldorf College, where she will pursue a career
in nursing. Good luck with all you do, Amy!
On our Golden Bear calendar this week, there'd district
speech contest today here at Garrigan. Then tomorrow
intramurals resume.
Tuesday the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will start
the registration process for next fall's classes. Then on
Tuesday night the Golden Bear boys will take on
Manson/Northwest Webster in the district finals at
Humboldt.
If the boys win on Tuesday, we'll fast forward to the next
big event--the substate game next Friday night at Forest
City. Also next Friday is the annual Education Fair at
Seton Middle School
Finally this week we'd like to offer our sympathy to our
friends at North Kossuth after the loss of their classmate
this past week. We're thinking of you, and we wish you all
the best.
That's the 'Bear Facts' for another week. Thanks for
listening, and be sure to catch the show again next week
when we'll fill you in on the details of the state girls'
basketball tournament and Bishop Garrigan High School.
